For Authors
Submit ManuscriptThe Houston Journal of International Law (HJIL) invites submission of manuscripts.
HJIL welcomes submissions of all lengths regarding a range of international law topics, with a particular focus on pieces addressing energy law, space law, and Latin America. In addition, we are actively looking for a piece concerning the FIFA World Cup, which will be published alongside two others in the first issue of volume 49. All international law pieces are welcome.
Most articles published in HJIL are approximately 10,000–25,000 words in length, including footnotes (i.e., approximately 20–60 publication-formatted pages, including footnotes). Submissions are welcomed from those holding a JD, LLB, or LLM degree. HJIL does not accept submissions from law students.
First published in 1978, HJIL is a scholarly law journal run by law students at the University of Houston Law Center. HJIL produces three annual publications that are edited by its student members. All pieces published by HJIL go through a multi-stage editorial process that corrects grammar, format, and citations in addition to substantiating each citation. This process typically takes 60-90 days, including the time allocated for you to review and respond to the editors’ suggestions.
Submissions are needed for three issues set to be published in volume 49 during the 2026-27 academic year.
